Start with payments and shipping
A Gulf customer expects Mada, Apple Pay, and buy-now-pay-later options like Tabby and Tamara, plus local shipping they recognise. Any platform that makes those awkward is the wrong platform, however famous it is.
List your payment methods and your shipper before you compare platforms. The rest — themes, apps, dashboards — matters far less than checkout working the way your customer expects.
Salla and Zid: built for the Gulf
Salla and Zid were built for this market: Arabic-first, Mada and local payments native, local shipping integrations ready. For most Gulf businesses, one of these two is the right default.
Their trade-off is scope: they are stores, not general website builders. If you need a store plus a rich content site, you pair them with a marketing site rather than forcing one tool to do both.
Shopify: global apps, global bill
Shopify has the deepest app store and the most themes. It also bills monthly in dollars, and Gulf payment and shipping setups often need paid apps on top.
Pick Shopify when you sell internationally, need a specific app only it has, or already run on it. Do not pick it just because it is the name you have heard most.
WooCommerce: you own it, you maintain it
WooCommerce on WordPress gives you full ownership and no platform rent — and full responsibility. Updates, security, backups and hosting are yours, or your care plan's.
It fits businesses that want custom checkout flows or already run WordPress. It is the wrong pick if nobody will maintain it, because an unmaintained store is a hacked store.
Our rule
For a Gulf business starting out: Salla or Zid first, unless a concrete reason says otherwise. That reason, stated plainly, is what the discovery call is for.
